Innovative Approaches to Creativity and Collaboration in Indonesia and Beyond: Q&A with gamelan artist I Putu Gede Sukaryana
Friday, April 17
2pm, Scales M306
After sharing excerpts from his series of compositions for small gongs, known collectively as Anomali, I Putu Gede Sukaryana (Balot) will discuss the motives behind his work with Insitu Recordings and respond to questions about his creative process. Bridging carefully considered limitations with unconventional instrumentation and new playing techniques, and inspired by minimax methods associated with the award-winning composer Slamet Abdul Sjukur, Anomali is as groundbreaking as it is informed by recent trends in music composition in Indonesia. The series is also exemplary of his unique approach to creativity and collaboration, which has influenced his peers and shaped Insitu Recordings’ mission.
